Felt’s goal with the VR bikes was to design a bike that will have the responsive handling of a racing bike on paved roads, but versatile and durable enough to traverse dirt and gravel roads simply by installing larger tires.
This combination of performance and versatility offered by bikes like the Felt VR models is the latest direction for road bike design.
Felt VR Carbon Frame
The Felt VR carbon frame is constructed using Felt’s MMC method, this means that Felt molds major pieces of the frame as a unit, rather than having myriad individual pieces that are then bonded together.
The carbon fiber used in the frame, and the way that carbon is laid up, works its usual magic, providing a smoother ride than aluminum, filtering out much of the road shock and high frequency vibration that an aluminum frame tends to transmit to the rider, while also offering a stiff platform for power transmission to the road.
Compared to an aluminum frame the carbon fiber frame’s lighter weight, vibration damping and additional lateral stiffness are all appreciated.
Felt VR Components
The shifters and brakes are Shimano's 105 R7000 series with full hydraulic brakes and the crankset is a 105 with compact 50 and 34 teeth chainrings.
Matched with the wide range 11-34 cassette in back, the resulting gear ratio is a very low 1 to 1. Great for the unrelenting SW PA hills.
